Training requirements at younger ages should enhance the movement patters in the larger muscle groups;
This page is intended for very younger skaters but it should be remembered that the parent has a huge effect on the out come of the development of your child at  the early ages.
Get out and PLAY with you children
At this stage it should be about :
               -   having FUN
               -   playing many different sports
-   developing the Agility, Coordination and Balance needed                                       to build the base for sport development later in life.
       -    Learning to appreciate the value of a healthy life style
-     Begining to develop a good work ethic

Parents play a huge role in developing these skills in daily life.development movement skills required by children of these ages is gotten by playing games.

With this program, skill acquisitions are an opportunity for parents and their children to play and interact together.  This interactions that incoporate the skills needed for future development in any sport are what should be focused on .

1.   That sport is FUN
2.   skill development and refinement based on the childs muscle recruitment ability
3.   Proper development recruitment of appropriate muscle groups for gross motor skills.
4.   Directional speed
5.   Balance & coordination skills
6.   Agility and flexibility

There is not an actual summer training program for skaters at this age -  but here are some general skills that must be developed at this stage in their life.

Below are ideas for you to use in your daily life with your children.

Speed skaters need to eventually develop great endurance for skating.  It begins with the development of the Aerobic capacity system  BEFORE the child reaches peak height velocity ( the growth spurt).  This usually takes place somewhere between 12 & 15 years of age and will vary greatly among children and especially between boys and girls.
The best thing you can do developmentally, for your child, is get out and go for an EASY run or bike with you child and play challenging games with your kids.
Get out and PLAY with your children.

Below are some ideas that you might use to help in their coordination & flexibility as they grow.

Flexibility / Balance programs :

available for all levels of skaters.  Flexibility and balance are extremely important building blocks for any growing child.  As your bones and muscles grow, you need to be continually stretching and keeping your muscles & joints moving in a maximum range of motion. You must also learn to develop quality balance skills for all your activities.

STRENGTH  DEVELOPMENT - can be done at the young ages - with the main focus on general body strength in a range of movements the also include other training components for this age group .    These programs can be fun and can be done with parents at home or at the cottage .
